Frequently Asked Questions: How Do Wraps and Cellulite Treatments Work?

Clients usually have questions when they come to us for a body wrap or cellulite treatment. The two questions we get asked most frequently are, “do your wraps and cellulite treatments really work?” and, “how do they work?” We will be addressing some of the questions we get asked most frequently over the coming weeks – today, we will tackle the two questions above.

Question 1: Will your services provide me with results?

Short answer: Yes! But there are some things you need to know in order to have realistic expectations of what type of results to expect.

At Venus, we offer two main types of body treatments: body wraps, and cellulite treatments. Wraps work quickly by reducing excess water and detoxifying, along with providing a skin treatment that improves smoothness and softness. The results are temporary.

Cellulite treatments such as Endermologie and Dermosonic work more slowly, usually over the course of several treatments, to create a more lasting change in the body. Cellulite treatments work below the surface of the skin to change the elasticity of the connective fibers that can cause cellulite, therefore, the changes last longer than a wrap.

Question 2: How do the treatments work?

To understand how these treatments work it is important to understand what cellulite actually is, and what causes it.

Cellulite is caused when subcutaneous fat and fluid pushes through the connective tissue fibers that lie between the skin and muscle layers. These fibers tend to be “tighter” on women than on men, and that can lead to an appearance of cellulite, particularly as we lose collagen through natural aging processes. It is not known what precisely causes these fibers to be tighter in some people than in others, but it has been linked to hormonal activity (the primary factor being estrogen, which is why this problem affects women more than men), age, scar tissue, and even stress levels.

The appearance of cellulite can be reduced in a variety of ways, but the primary methods involve the application of heat and massage to loosen the connective tissues between skin layers, similar to the same principle that recommends stretching after exercise to loosen muscle fascia when muscles are warm.

These are the principles behind most of the cellulite treatments Venus provides. Our cellulite treatments, particularly Endermologie and Dermosonic, provide a deep tissue massage that temporarily loosens the subcutaneous connective tissue fibers, as well as stimulating the lymphatic system to reduce retention of fluid and excess toxins. We can combine them with treatments such as Heccus which will warm the area being treated, allowing the machine treatments to be more effective.

In addition to reduced dimpling, there can also be a reduction in size that results from our cellulite treatments, due to the elimination of excess fluid. Over time and with multiple applications, the results become more permanent, just as stretching a muscle over time will increase your flexibility. It may take more time to see results from a cellulite treatment, but the results last longer than a body wrap.

Body wraps, on the other hand, work by reducing excess water retention that can lead to an appearance of puffiness. Technically, they do not “treat” cellulite but they can make it appear less noticeable, by reducing puffiness, along with some inch loss. Many of our body wrap clients will see a noticeable difference on the very first visit, including smoother, healthier looking skin.

The more water you were retaining prior to treatment, the better the results you may see from a wrap. However, these results are temporary in nature. Your body will eventually replace the excess fluid, particularly if there is something in your usual diet and exercise routine – such as excess consumption of carbohydrates or sodium – that is causing the water to be retained.

Our therapists can help by advising about a few changes you can make to your diet and exercise regime that can slow this process down, but you definitely should expect that the results you see from a body wrap will not last beyond a few days to a week. They are a great solution for women who want a treatment that will give fast results for a specific event.

The Bottom Line

So, bottom line, do the treatments work? We can definitely say yes, they do. Clients may notice smoother, firmer, more healthy looking skin from the very first visit, and over time, depending on body type, diet, exercise and other factors, they also see a reduction in the appearance of cellulite.

With our cellulite treatments, we are working with the human body non-invasively to create a structural change, so just as one does not see instant results at the gym, it can take time for our treatments to get more noticeable, lasting results. Most personal trainers will tell you that it takes time to see changes in your body, and it is the same with our treatments. For most people, it takes several treatments to see results.

So, our advice is that if you are needing immediate inch loss and reduced puffiness, a wrap is the way to go. If you have a bit more time and want longer lasting results, consider our cellulite treatments. For cellulite, we generally recommend five to ten treatments, preferably done twice a week over the course of a couple of months.

And if you are looking for both short term and long term results, talk to us about a custom package that combines wraps, cellulite treatments and an exercise treatment like Power Plate. Just remember that the biggest differences we make in our body don’t come from a treatment or a gym, they happen at home. Diet and exercise are the most critical component in your results.
