Eyebrows?

Artistic eyebrow shaping is a technique that enhances the beauty of the natural eyebrow line. If you are searching for the perfect place to shape your eyebrows, Venus estheticians will contour and shape your eyebrow line in a way that will enhance the natural beauty of your face.

Brazilian?

This type of waxing is a hair "style" that removes most (or all) of the hair from your intimate area, typically a small line of pubic hair is left (the landing strip). If all of the hair is removed, it is called a full Brazilian. The treatment originates from (you guessed it) Brazil, but was popularized in the U.S. in NYC over a decade ago. Interestingly, there is not really a special term for this type of treatment in Brazil; they simply call it a wax. If you've ever thought about getting a Brazilian but weren't sure because of the pain or your modesty, go ahead and give it a try – life is short! There is a very good reason why this spa treatment is so popular. When (and if) you decide to do it, it is important that you go to a spa with a good reputation.

The bottom line:

You will have to be in the buff in front of a stranger, and this can be either somewhat uncomfortable or very embarrassing depending on your modesty. You will be naked at some point with your legs open and you will be touched virtually everywhere. However, please keep in mind that your esthetician is a trained, experienced professional who has done this treatment more than you can fathom. Your best approach to the bikini or Brazilian treatment should be to relax. Before you make the leap, keep in mind that this is not a procedure for the easily-embarrassed or anyone that is uncomfortable exposing their "privates".

How does it work?

The wax is applied with a spatula and taken off with a fast jerk, against the direction of hair growth. The keys to a successful and relatively painless wax are to take Advil and to get the treatment done regularly – with no shaving in between treatments.

Is it painful?

Depending on your sensitivity to pain and how coarse your hair is – it can be painful. The coarser the hair, the coarser the root of the hair and pulling thicker (actually any) hair is going to be uncomfortable–no way around this, really. For most though, the pain is not as bad as imagined and becomes more tolerable over time.

Interesting side note:

Getting facial hair removed from your upper lip can be more painful than the Brazilian wax.

Will my skin become red and irritated?

For some people, there are no signs of irritation. Others (depending on the sensitivity of their skin) will experience redness and or small bumps, but this condition is temporary and typically fades within 24 hours.

Will this treatment make my hair grow back thicker or darker?

No, absolutely not. It does not cause your hair to grow thicker nor does it create more hair follicles. If you become a regular waxer, you will notice that your hair will become less coarse and sparser over time.

How long does my hair have to be?

A 1/4 of an inch is ideal for better, longer lasting results, but it can be shorter. If your hair is any longer, you or your esthetician will need to cut the hair before waxing.

Will I get ingrown hairs?

It can happen. Because this treatment removes the entire hair from the follicle, your skin will naturally harden and thicken around the area before the new hair grows in. Because of this temporary condition, it is important to keep the waxed areas exfoliated. Ideally you'd use a gentle scrub (very gentle!) a few days after treatment and continue this exfoliation 1 to 2 times per week.

After-wax tip:

Try to wear loose-fitting clothes for a few days after treatment to give your skin a chance to breathe and to reduce moisture. The bikini, lip and underarm areas are where we tend to perspire, and perspiration creates moisture which can cause bacteria to grow. Once these areas have been treated, the follicles are open and are susceptible to bacterial infections. It is important to keep the treated area as clean and dry as possible within the first few days.

What is the best way to prevent infection?

Keeping the area exfoliated and applying a blend of tea tree oil and lavender oil will help. There are also after-treatment solutions in the market which can help to prevent ingrown hairs and minimize razor bumps.

Will treatment change the pigmentation of my skin?

No, waxing does not cause dark spots. However, if you spend time in the sun after waxing you can more easily burn your skin, which can result in sun damage and ultimately dark spots (from the sun, not the wax). If you are tan, the wax can strip your tan because the waxing exfoliates the out most layer of the skin. You may experience some lightening if you have a dark tan from sun or sunless tanning products.

A few suggestions:

  • Advil 30 minutes prior to treatment can help reduce swelling and pain.
  • Grapeseed oil works wonders to remove excess wax.
  • Try to relax! Close your eyes and take deep breaths. Tensing up will constrict your follicles causing more resistance and potentially more pain.
  • Prior to menstruation or during menstruation, you are more sensitive so you will most likely want to avoid treatment then.
  • It is normal for those who have coarse hair to bleed a little, so don't worry if it happens.

When choosing an esthetician, find out how long your esthetician has been providing this treatment:

It is okay to ask–actually a very good idea to do so. You probably do not want to get treated by someone fresh out of school. If the esthetician is new, ask if she has attended other training in this type of treatment. Experience matters.

Can I treat myself?

Yes you can! But, it would be a good idea to watch a trained esthetician first - take notes and ask questions. It is not recommended to do your own bikini or underarm wax because the skin needs to be pulled tight to avoid bruising or removing any skin (yes, this can happen). Lip, chin, toes and legs are easier to treat on your own.

Note:

We cannot perform waxing services on clients who are taking Accutane, Differin, and Retin-A due to the sensitivity these products cause. Please allow at least 24 hours before exposure to the sun after your waxing service to prevent sensitive skin from burning.
